Post-Portrait
March 22 – June 30, 2023
“What would Leonardo da Vinci’s reaction be if he, with his contemporary perception and inclination, could travel through time and see the current art scene, contemporary products, and imaging techniques? This question, which occasionally visits my mind, has gradually turned into a concern.”
- Mehmet Yılmaz
After the “Twins: Photography is Painting” series, which explores the connection between painting and photography, and the “Heymimres” series, where he examined the relationships between sculpture, architecture, and painting, we now find the artist engaged in a cross-temporal inquiry. Imagining himself as Leonardo da Vinci, Yılmaz begins the Post-Portrait series with a Mona Lisa portrait.
“I was also looking for an opportunity for a video project. I think the birthing process was about to start. The question/answer I mentioned appeared in my mind as the final scene of the movie. It was time for the process leading up to this scene... Possibilities started flowing before my eyes.”
Thus, the portraits he began creating in his studio for the video shoot formed a series. As we witness the formation of a video-centric series with Post-Portrait, we also observe an interdisciplinary unity.
In this experimental process, Yılmaz, placing Mona Lisa in the lead role, invites you to share this experience.
Post-Portrait can be viewed at Piramid Sanat until June 30, 2023.
